Don Hutchison

Don Hutchison Date of Birth: May 9, 1971

Scottish international midfielder Don joined Luton as a 36-year-old, one of several veteran campaigners recruited by manager Kevin Blackwell in the summer of 2007. He no longer possessed the pace and stamina of his youth but could still read the game brilliantly and made significant contributions during an injury-plagued single season at Kenilworth Road, during which he also helped out with coaching. Don’s finest hour in a Luton shirt was the memorable night at Anfield when he marshalled a makeshift line-up in an FA Cup third round replay against mighty Liverpool, one of his former clubs.

Born a Geordie, Don started out at Hartlepool before being quickly snapped up by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, the first move of a 20-year-career that also took him to West Ham, Sheffield United, Everton, Sunderland, Millwall and Coventry. In 1999 he was called up by Scotland, qualifying due to his Nairn-born father, and went on to win 26 full caps. A personal highlight was heading the winner in a Euro 2000 play-off against England at Wembley.

Don’s club career ended after his 21 appearances for Luton during a period of financial crisis. He signed off in 2008 with a wonderful gesture, refusing to accept his final two wage packets and offering to sponsor two youth team players for the following season. Since retirement Don has worked as a TV pundit and commentator, notably with ESPN.
