Robert (Bob) Murray HAWKES

Luton Town’s first ‘superstar’ was born in Breachwood Green in 1880 and after playing junior football in the town joined the Strawplaiters in 1900 on amateur forms.
After winning a place in the side he went on to became ‘the finest half-back in the south’ using passing skill on the floor and quick anticipation rather than brawn.
He became the Town’s first England international, winning five caps to go with the 19 he won playing for England at amateur level. He also was part of the Great Britain team that won a footballing gold in the 1908 Olympics.
Remaining an amateur until 1911, Bob remained loyal to the Town, turning down moves elsewhere preferring to work as a hat manufacturer and play for what turned out to be his only club.
After 410 competitive games for the club he bowed out in 1920, remaining in the town until passing away in 1945.
