George Dennis

George Thomas DENNIS

When the Town signed a little known Nottingham Forest reserve winger in May 1924 no-one would know how influential he would become throughout the 1920s.
Born in Moira, Leicestershire in 1897, George signed for Forest in 1921 but made only thirty League appearances in three years before moving to Kenilworth Road.
A fast winger with good control, he could also play at wing-half. Excellent free kick taker and deadly from the spot - it is said that he successfully converted 22 consecutive penalties. Several times over the next five years the club bought in replacement players but the crowd favourite always bounced back.
Leaving the club in 1929 he had a short spell at Norwich before finishing his career at Bristol Rovers where he played at full-back.
Living in Swadlincote, he became a Public Works labourer and passed away in Burton in 1969.
