Hugh McJarrow
Hugh McJarrow Date of Birth: Jan 29, 1928 Share "Hugh McJarrow" on FacebookDuring the War, Hugh worked down the mines as a ‘Bevin Boy’ before signing on with Chesterfield in peacetime. Hardly a regular in the Spireites side initially, Hugh exploded on to the football stage in 1949/50 when converted to a centre-forward and making goalscoring look easy.
This newly discovered talent led to him being snapped up by Sheffield Wednesday in 1950 who he helped to promotion in his first season. After losing his place to Derek Dooley, Hugh made a £5,000 move to Luton where he scored twice on his debut in a 3-3 home draw with Nottingham Forest in February 1952.
Finishing his first season at Kenilworth Road with five goals from five starts Luton supporters looked forward to more of the same but a succession of injuries cut back his appearances leading to a move to Plymouth where he was no more successful.
Hugh sadly died in 1987, aged only 59.
