Charlie Milam

Charles Richard Milam Date of Birth: Jan 7, 1881

Born 1881 in Hampton Hill, Charlie played as a goalkeeper for the local side before moving to Luton. Despite managing a clean sheet, the Southern League win over Brentford proved to be his only appearance and he first moved to Southall and then up to Durham in 1909 after marrying a local woman. In WW1 he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

During his time playing for Durham Albion he was described as having, 'a powerful physique, cool and resourceful with a large amount of experience gained under the Southern League banner.' Another account describes him as having, 'the good looks of a matinee-idol : tall, slim with a striking moustache.'

An accomplished cricketer, he was Durham City's pro from 1907 to 1929 and would make 22 appearances in the Minor County Championship for Durham, as well as becoming the cricket coach at Durham School.

He also worked as publican - taking on the role of manager of the Colpitt's Hotel and Buffalo Head in Durham - during a long and varied life.

Charlie passed away in April 1949.
