William Gallacher

William Gallacher

Born in Bonhill, Dumbarton in 1872, William played for Clydebank before venturing south to Bootle to play in the Football League.

Returning to Scotland, the clever inside-forward turned out for Vale of Leven before being attracted by the big money on offer from the Town upon their entry into the Southern League in 1894.

Forming a good relationship with former Bootle team mate Hugh Galbraith the Town had a forward line as good as anything in the south which was maintained when the club entered the Football League in 1897.

With the Town suffering severe financial problems in 1898, William along with several other of the highly paid professionals were forced to leave the club. William joined Football League new boys Glossop North End before hanging up his boots in 1900.

William returned to Bonhill to live and work and passed away there in 1940.
