My Five Favourite Hatters
Zar Nicholson

As part of our ongoing series, we ask supporters to pick their five favourite Hatters of all time. This week it's the turn of supporter Zar Nicholson.

"My brother took me to my first Hatters game at Christmas 1977 against Sheffield United, where I stood on a stool my late dad made for me so I could see over the dugouts in front of the main stand. Over the years I have watched games from all sides of the ground – Oak Road, The Bobbers, stood on the Kenny End before seats were installed then sat there, even been in the Directors Box on numerous occasions but nowadays accompany my wife in the David Preece Stand."

brian stein

(496 APPEARANCES, 154 goals 1977-1988, 1991-1992)

"Simply one of the best finishers the club has ever seen. His scoring ability was superb and he had such a telepathy with Ricky Hill, who knew exactly where Bruno was going to run. Formed such a formidable partnership with Paul Walsh too and a travesty that he never won more England caps than he did. I saw Brian score his first goals for the Hatters – a brace against Sheffield Utd in Dec 1977 and his last goals in 2 separate stints  – On that glorious sunny afternoon on 24th April 1988 at Old Wembley, a 90th minute winner in the Littlewoods Cup Final and then when he returned to the club 3 years later, netting against Aston Villa at home towards the end of the 1991/92 season, one that culminated in relegation."

steve davis
(173 appearances, 27 goals 1995-1998)

"A hard tackling goal scoring centre half. A tough uncompromising defender good in the air at both ends of the pitch, who scored in that amazing League Cup tie against Ipswich in September 1998, a prelude to Marv’s last gasp winner ! I was so disappointed when Stevo was sold back to Burnley but still keep in contact and tabs on how he is doing even to this day."

david moss
(245 appearances, 94 goals 1978-1985)

"I’ve always had an affinity with a good old traditional winger and Mossy was no exception. He was quick with both feet and deadly with free kicks and penalties. He was instrumental running down the wing before a pin point cross for Steve White to score with a trademark header in a 2 – 1 home win against Gary Lineker’s Leicester City in the 1981/82 Div2 Title winning season. That goal remains my all time favourite Hatters goal. My favourite Mossy finish was his chipped effort against Arsenal in our first season in the top flight the following season, the start of the comeback from 2 goals down to draw 2-2.

Mossy was certainly a fan favourite and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him twice – In 1980 when I was a kid and won a Luton Evening Post Competition, met him after a match against Orient to be presented with a kit and tracksuit and then more recently at a ‘They Played For David Pleat@ Evening at the Hat Factory."

jean-louis valois
(34 appearances, 6 goals 2001-2002)

"What an amazing talent this Frenchman was, he could dribble, cross and shoot all at the same time  – some memorable goals along the way but the debut performance and goal in the 5-1 thumping of Torquay at Kenilworth Rd in September 2001 will take some beating. It is such a shame he did not stay more than the one incredible season he had with us.."

jack stacey
(95 appearances, 5 goals 2017-2019)

"A swashbuckling wing back – who had such an understanding with Andrew Shinnie during the memorable march to the 2018/19 League 1 Title winning season.

A reliable defender but he was renowned for setting up numerous goals with Shinniesta for James Collins that season and even popped up with a few himself. However, his best was a 60 yard dash before unleashing a rocket off the underside of the crossbar to secure a 2-0 home win against Port Vale in September 2017."

Many thanks to Zar for taking the time to put together his list and the excellent choices.
