George Kay

George Kay Date of Birth: Sep 21, 1891

A Mancunian, George worked in the textile trade when he became a professional footballer. His first big club was Bolton Wanderers before World War One. He later played in Ireland and spent 9 seasons with West Ham United and was captain for several seasons, including seasons when they won promotion and lost the F.A. Cup Final in 1923, the first at Wembley Stadium known as the White Horse Final.

After 259 games and 17 goals for West Ham, George became trainer/coach at Luton in 1928. John McCartney left as manager just before Christmas 1929 and just after the festivities the Board of Directors appointed George as “secretary-manager” as the job was known.

Left at the end of May 1931 and was succeeded by Harold Wightman. George went to Southampton and did well despite financial problems. He stayed 5 seasons and accepted an offer from Liverpool in 1936 where he stayed until January 1951 when ill health forced him to step down. His accomplishments at Liverpool include guiding them to be top flight League Champions in 1946/47 and reaching their first F.A. Cup Final in 1950, a loss to Arsenal.

George passed away in Liverpool on the 18th April 1954.
