George Wilcox Gilder Share "George Wilcox Gilder" on FacebookGeorge Wilcox Gilder served as the Mayor of Luton from 1884 to 1885 and also as the first President of the new Luton Town Football Club in 1885.
The son of a Leeds bricklayer, George was born in Newport Pagnell but made his living as a Straw Hat manufacturer in Luton. He died on September the 10th 1921 at the age of 85, his obituary in the Luton News recording him as the Town's 'Grand Old Man', with the then current mayor saying, 'he was a great public servant....he had the welfare of this town at heart.'
