“A hat manufacturer in Luton for over 40 years, Mr Horace Reginald Hansell died on Sunday at his home, 184 New Bedford Road, Luton. He was 66.

Born in Luton, Mr Hansell first set up business before the First World War, as a hat manufacturer in Waller-street, in partnership with his brother. The business was later moved to Bute-street, where the firm still trades under the name of H.S. Hansell.

At one time Mr Hansell was a member of the Luton Town Council, and for a period was chairman of the Public Health Committee.

In 1930 he was appointed a Director of Luton Town Football Club.

For two years Mr Hansell was president of Beech Hill Conservative Club, after previously serving as vice-president.

Mr Hansell is survived by a widow. The funeral is today, a service at the house to precede cremation at Golders Green. It is requested that there should be no flowers."

In June 1931 he became Town Councillor for the Central Ward. He was more well known before his election as the organiser of the successful tombolo promoted in connection with the big Children’s Hospital fete in Wardown Park.

He was elected as a Luton Town Director for a three year term but did not seek re-election in 1933 when his term was up due to his other public services.
