Jack Crompton

John Crompton Date of Birth: Dec 18, 1921

A fine goalkeeper for Manchester United whose career was delayed by World War Two, Jack Crompton was first employed at Kenilworth Road as a coach and trainer, though the club granted a release so he could return to Old Trafford after the Munich air disaster in 1958.

Jack was back at Luton in 1962 replacing another ex-goalkeeper, Sam Bartram, as Town manager. However his tenure was to be even shorter this time, just seven days and without a match played, before he resigned citing ‘health’ reasons.

He returned to Old Trafford once more and served as Assistant Manager to Matt Busby throughout the rest of the 1960s. A short spell as Barrow manager followed, as well as coaching roles at Bury and Preston North End. Jack passed away in 2013, aged 91.

The Luton manager who never managed a game.
