Hatters exit Carabao Cup at Coventry - Much-changed Hatters edged out narrowly by Sky Blues
A much-changed Town side exited the Carabao Cup at the first stage following a narrow defeat at Coventry.
Matt Bloomfield fielded a completely different starting eleven that beat Peterborough on Saturday against their Championship opponents but, despite a series of half-chances, especially in the first half, the Town – 1988 winners of the competition – fell at the first hurdle following Ellis Simms’ goal shortly before the hour.
But there can be plenty of positives to take as a young side, which included 17-year-old academy graduate Christian Chigozie, ran the hosts close.
Of the 11 changes from the win at London Road, three players made their Luton Town debuts with new signing Cohen Bramall and Gideon Kodua joining Chigozie in marking their first appearances in orange.
The Town looked bright in the opening stages with Kodua and Lamine Fanne having plenty of the ball – Fanne twice creating two openings in the first 12 minutes which were blocked.
Still the Hatters pressed, and five minutes later, Cauley Woodrow’s deft header following Liam Walsh’s left-wing corner landed a yard the wrong side of the post. Woodrow then hit a piledriver from distance moments later which warmed the gloves of Ben Wilson in the Coventry goal.
At the other end James Shea, making his 111th appearance, had very little to do. Simms came close to breaking the deadlock on 23 minutes when hooking wide before Thomas Holmes blocked a goal-bound effort from Kai Andrews shortly after.
As the first half came to a conclusion, the Town upped the ante. Woodrow saw a shot blocked from a narrow angle before Zack Nelson’s shot suffered the same fate after good work from Fanne and Kodua.
Bloomfield introduced Nigel Lonwijk at the break in place of Bramall down the left but, with the second half’s first real chance, the Town fell behind.
Coventry’s Rafael and Haji Wright combined well down the right for the latter to send a ball bobbling across the face of goal and Simms tucked home into an empty net.
In response, changes followed for the Hatters with Milli Alli, Jake Richards – also on for his debut – Jerry Yates and Josh Phillips sent on.
And they almost had an instant impact on 65 minutes when Alli raced down the right to fashion a chance that led to Nelson blazing a first-time shot high over the bar when well-placed on the edge of the box.
Time began to tick down but, as the Town chased an equaliser in hope of forcing penalties, they were indebted to a magnificent save from Shea to keep out a goal-bound free-kick from Jack Rudoni on 76 minutes.
While the Hatters continued to rally, they could not break down the home defence and, in truth, Coventry should have been home and hosed had Simms converted two decent chances from close range in the final moments.
At the death the Town almost snatched an equaliser when, from a Walsh corner and with Shea up from the back, Mark McGuinness nodded across goal and Richards headed over.
But what was the game’s final chance and with it went the Hatters’ hope of a run in the competition.
It’s back to League One action on Saturday with a trip to Bradford. We’ll see you then. UTT.

Carabao Cup first round: Coventry City 1 Luton Town 0
Much-changed Luton suffer Carabao Cup first round exit at Coventry City
Luton Town's foray into the Carabao Cup was ended at the first hurdle as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Championship side Coventry City this evening.
Having promised he would make some changes after starting the season with back-to-back League One wins, and promotion to the Championship an absolute must, Bloomfield stuck to his word, altering the entire side, as he gave debuts to summer signings Gideon Kodua and Cohen Bramall. Also getting a first start was academy graduate Christian Chigozie who had been on the bench for Town in the Premier League and is incredibly highly thought of by those at Kenilworth Road.
James Shea was given the gloves in place of Josh Keeley, while Zack Nelson and Lamine Fanne took over in midfield as Lasse Nordas and Cauley Woodrow formed a new-look strike partnership. Despite the nature of the XI, up against a far stronger City team, Town made a bright start, Kodua bursting away through the middle of the pitch and finding Fanne to his right, the midfielder cutting on to his left foot and shooting, only to see it blocked away.
City then might have done better on six minutes, a through ball beating Tom Holmes, and sending Ellis Simms away, but with Mark McGuinness trying to get back and apply the pressure, he dragged tamely wide. Luton then enjoyed some decent territory as Fanne picked up a loose ball and tore away, getting into the box before once again seeing his effort deflected.
With Bramall escaping away on the left, he then won a corner that ex-Sky Blues midfielder Liam Walsh sent in, as Woodrow glanced a header just the wrong side of the post. On 20 minutes, the forward then picked up possession after good work by Fanne and had a crack from distance which saw Ben Wilson rather uncomfortably parry away, before he cleverly disguised a pass through to Nordas who tried to slide and hook it in, failing to make any kind of serious connection.
City looked dangerous when they went forward themselves, a cross from the right volleyed into the ground and over by Simms, before Holmes prevented a certain goal, getting his body in the way of Kai Andrews' close range attempt. A fairly open contest saw Bramall picked out by Holmes' excellent pass to find Woodrow whose attempt was charged down to Walsh just outside the box, the midfielder not having his finest moment, dragging woefully off target.
With Bramall having not played any minutes at all since last season, the former Portsmouth player’s debut was ended at the break, replaced by Nigel Lonwijk as Luton continued to play the better football, Fanne sliding Kodua through as his cross was cleared behind for a corner. The deadlock was then broken out of nothing really with 57 minutes on the clock as Town’s defence switched off for the first time and were punished, Raphael advancing and finding Wright, who had lost McGuinness, his cross-shot beating Shea, tapped in from a couple of yards by the unmarked Simms.
Town responded by bringing on Jake Richards for his first appearance, while Mill Alli came on too, as they were quickly followed by Josh Phillips and Jerry Yates. It almost led to an instant leveller, Alli's cross cleared as far as Nelson some 20 yards out, but unlike last term when he netted an absolute screamer at QPR in this competition, he lofted harmlessly over the bar.
The hosts also rung the changes though, bringing on experienced campaigners like Jack Rudoni, Matt Grimes, Tatsuhrio Sakamoto and Brandon Thomas-Asante, with Rudoni almost adding a second from a free kick on 76 minutes, Shea saving brilliantly down to his right. The Hatters were controversially denied a clear chance to equalise with seven to go, as Yates burst clean through on goal, only for referee Leight Doughty to whistle and pull the play back, awarding a free kick to the Hatters, a decision that left Bloomfield incredulous.
Simms then should have put the tie beyond doubt moments later, but wasted the chance to double to his tally, sidefooting over, as he also prodded wide after an impressive Rudoni burst. During four minutes of stoppage time, the visitors threatened to force a penalty shootout, as Walsh's blast was deflected behind for a corner that saw Shea come up, but the delivery was met by McGuinness and then flicked over the top by Richards.
Sky Blues: Ben Wilson, Bobby Thomas (Liam Kitching 46), Jamie Allen, Ellis Simms, Haji Wright (Jack Rudoni 63), Raphael (Brandon Thomas-Asante 75), Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Jake Bidwell (C), Victor Torp (Matt Grimes 63), Miguel Brau, Kai Andrews (Tatsuhrio Sakamoto 63). Subs not used: Brad Collins, Milan Van Ewijk, Justin Obikwu, Callum Perry.
Hatters: James Shea, Gideon Kodua (Jake Richards 59), Mark McGuinness (C), Christian Chigozie, Tom Holmes (Josh Phillips 63), Cohen Bramall (Nigel Lonwijk 46), Liam Walsh, Lamine Fanne, Zack Nelson, Lasse Nordas (Jerry Yates 64), Cauley Woodrow (Milli Alli 59). Bloomfield thought Luton produced some 'admirable performances' during Sky Blues loss
Town chief reflects on Carabao Cup exit
Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield felt his side produced some ‘admirable’ performances during their 1-0 Carabao Cup first round defeat at Coventry City last night.
The Town manager changed all 11 players from the 2-0 League One victory against Peterborough United on Saturday, as James Shea took over between the posts, with academy graduate Christian Chigozie earning his professional debut alongside Mark McGuiness and Tom Holmes in Luton’s back three. West Ham loanee Gideon Kodua and recent addition Cohen Bramall also had their first run-outs for the Hatters, while Cauley Woodrow partnered Lasse Nordas upfront, the visitors knocked out when their defensive switched off allowing Haji Wright’s cross-shot to be tapped in by Ellis Simms.
Although Simms squandered some fine chances late on, while Shea denied Jack Rudoni impressively as the Sky Blues had picked a far stronger XI on paper, bolstering their team with some experienced replacements in the second period, the Hatters bringing on Jake Richards for his maiden outing and youngster Josh Philips too, they played some good football throughout, going close, particularly in the first half. Then, Lamine Fanne had two shots blocked, while Cauley Woodrow glanced wide and also saw his effort from range parried away by Ben Wilson.
Asked to sum up the evening, Bloomfield, who also gave new addition Jerry Yates another run-out in the second period, said: “I thought it was a very good performance at times. I thought we played some really good football, we looked threatening, we just lacked that little bit in the final third of the pitch. A couple of really good chances and I thought there were some really admirable performances in there.
“First and foremost we’re managing some. Some of our players missed chunks of pre-season through injury or illness, some we signed late, so they’re still making up time. We felt like tonight was an ideal opportunity as one, we’ve got to manage some players, and on the other hand it was a chance to get everyone up to speed and judge a few. I really felt like I learned a lot tonight.
"I thought Gideon Kodua first half was fantastic, maybe ran out of juice a little bit in the second half. Zack (Nelson) was brilliant in the middle of the pitch, Walshy was top drawer, we know what Walshy brings. Cauley had a couple of nice moments, so there was lots to like about our performance, especially first half. I’m really bitterly disappointed for the boys that we’ve come away losing the game as I thought we showed some really promising moments.”
