Adam Boyd
Adam Boyd Date of Birth: May 25, 1982 Share "Adam Boyd" on FacebookBorn in Hartlepool, Adam signed his first professional terms with his home Town club Hartlepool United in 1998, while finishing his studies at Manor School of Technology. With impressive performances in the youth team, Adam started getting slowly introduced to the first team in 1999, while the Pools plied their trade in Division Three. Between 1999 and 2003, Adam made 25 starts and 38 appearances from the bench. New Hartlepool manager Neale Cooper, preferred Adam Boyd off the bench, therefore as Hartlepool were marching their way to promotion from Division Three, Adam chipped in with 5 goals off the bench, and would start the next season on loan back in Division Three with Boston United, where he received critical acclaim, scoring 4 goals in 14 games.
Adam returned to Hartlepool ready to compete for first team action in Division Two. Adam was questioned about why he returned 9lbs overweight, to which he claimed that he was eating more in order to bulk up, making it harder for him to get bullied off the ball, when asked about gym work, he said he was planning to start it soon. This led to a falling out which almost resulted in Adam transferring to Boston United for £5,000, which was far below Hartlepools’ quoted price.
It was a surprise to many when Adam was included in the next Hartlepool squad, however in the remaining 20 games, he managed to force his way into the team, finishing the 2003/04 season with 12 goals. Adam was then one of the top scorers in the 2004/05 season notching 22 goals in League 1, coming up against Luton Town who would go onto win the League 1 title. His performances earned national acclaim, and a host of Premier League clubs chasing his signature, albeit put off by the £1 million price tag. A serious injury limited him to just 21 appearances in the 2005/06 season, after which his former manager Mike Newell, now at Luton Town made an attempt to sign him, after being knocked back multiple times, eventually Hartlepool accepted an offer in the region of £500,000, allowing Boyd to join Luton Town in the Championship.
Adam signed a 3 year deal with Luton Town, ahead of the 2006/07 season, due to the hefty price tag and the financial situation at Luton at the time, hopes were high amongst the Hatter fanbase. On his debut, he played a key part in setting up Carlos Edwards for his goal against Leicester, making it 2-0. However fans noticed that Adam was behind in fitness compared to where the rest of the squad was, with Mike Newell coming out to mitigate that it was due to how long Adam had been out the previous season. Adam scored his first league goal against Queens Park Rangers, but his season was capped with Luton Town being relegated to League 1, Mike Newell the manager who signed him no longer at the club and only 2 goals in 23 appearances for Luton. Adam was released from his contract and signed for Leyton Orient, where he became a fan favourite in League 1 over his two seasons at Brisbane Road, after which he returned to Hartlepool for a fee of £50,000 who were also competing in League 1. He stayed at Hartlepool for three seasons before moving down the local non league pyramid, finishing up his professional career with Bishop Auckland.
Post football Adam moved into courier logistics for DPD as a delivery driver, and has worked in house for Hartlepool on co-commentary duties.
