Once his studies were completed the giant centre-half accepted an offer to join Luton Town in 1969 but he found his chances limited to one League appearance, at home to Middlesbrough in 1970.
One of four Luton players to join Cambridge United over the summer of 1971, Alan had a better time at the Abbey and was a regular for three seasons before moving to Cambridge City and St Neots and then drifting back to Scotland.
