Ashley Grimes

Augustine Ashley Grimes Date of Birth: Aug 2, 1957

Manchester United invited Dubliner Ashley over for a trial in 1972 but rejected him only to pay Bohemians £20,000 for him five years later!

Although never a regular at Old Trafford he did manage nearly 100 League appearances in six years before moving to Coventry in 1983 and then transferring to Luton a year later in a swap deal involving Kirk Stephens.

At Kenilworth Road, Ashley added to his Eire international caps and put on many cultured displays at left back or left midfield. Totally left footed, Ashley provided the awkward cross from the right that enabled Brian Stein to score the winner in the 1988 Littlewoods Cup final.

After a spell in Spain, Ashley saw out his career with Stoke before joining old colleague Lou Macari at several clubs as coach.
