Bert Hayhurst

Bert Albert Hayhurst Date of Birth: Sep 17, 1905

Born in Birdwell, near Barnsley in 1905 Bert played for his local club but failed to make the grade and moved on to Frickley Colliery from where he came to the Town in the summer of 1932.

Signed as a right-back he was converted to centre-half where he made his single appearance for Town. He caught the eye of Reading in two reserve games between the sides leading to him joining the Biscuitmen in 1933.

Our loss was Reading’s gain as he missed only seven games over the next five seasons before hanging up his boots at the outbreak of War.

Bert also played county cricket for Warwickshire as a medium-fast bowler and passed away in Reading in 1991.
