Bert Mitchell

Albert James Mitchell Date of Birth: Jan 22, 1922

Bert scored 41 goals for Luton in only 106 starts which was remarkable at the time as he was a winger and was meant to set up chances rather than take them.

Starting off with Stoke during the war years, Bert made his League debut for the Potters in peacetime and then moved on through Blackburn and Kettering before making a name for himself at Northampton.

A big fee plus Jim Wilson brought him to Kenilworth Road where he quickly became a crowd favourite with his ability to cut inside and shoot. He also boasted a 100% penalty record during his three years with the club.

After joining his old Northampton manager Bob Dennison at Middlesbrough in 1954, Bert, by now 32, saw his career come to a gentle close.

Bert continued to scout for Northampton in later life and died in 1997.
