Bertie Diaper

Albert William Frederick Diaper Date of Birth: Feb 11, 1909

Born in Woolston, Hants in 1909, Bertie was a carpenter in the winter and oarsman in the summer on the Isle of Wight as well as turning out for Cowes when he was recommended to Arsenal by his cousin Tom Parker.

After four years as a permanent reserve at Highbury he came to Luton in 1932 but fared little better at Kenilworth Road, making only three appearances at right-half before leaving at the season’s end.

Similar unsuccessful spells at Fulham and Charlton followed before he enjoyed a good run at Aldershot between 1936-38.

Bertie went back to carpentry after the War and did some scouting work for Reading before passing away in Basingstoke in 1995.
