Bill Gooney
Bill William Gooney Date of Birth: Oct 8, 1910 Share "Bill Gooney" on FacebookBorn in Sheffield in 1910, Bill was an England schoolboy international who was snapped up by Sheffield United to become one of their first ever youth team players, working as an office-boy in his spare time.
Making his debut for the Blades in 1930 he became a regular in the side as a clever and skilful wing-half and had racked up 132 League appearances by the time of his transfer to Plymouth in 1935.
Six months after joining Argyle, he formed part of the four player transfer to Luton in February 1936 but after only four appearances at the back end of that season and a handful of reserve games he left to play for a variety of non-League clubs.
A very good minor-counties cricketer, he passed away in Blackpool in 1978.
