Billy Bushell

William Reginald Bushell Date of Birth: Sep 29, 1881

Born in Wednesbury in 1881, Billy played his early football in the Black Country and was on the books of Aston Villa for a time.

Picked up by Norwich in 1905 he became a crowd favourite as a perceptive midfield player who could sniff out danger as well as play clever through passes. It came as a shock to the Norwich faithful when their skipper was enticed to Luton in 1910 where he was converted to centre-half despite being only 5’8”.

Following the Town’s relegation to Southern League Division Two in 1912 he joined Croydon Common who were to become our main rivals in the bid for promotion. Finishing off his career at Brentford he returned to the Midlands and passed away in Wednesbury in 1964.
