Brian starred for the Sunderland youth team which lost to Arsenal in the 1966 Youth Cup final but was not retained at the season’s end and was snapped up by Luton along with team mate Terry Adamson.

A speedy and brave winger, Brian made his Hatters debut in a 0-0 draw at Chester in October 1966 and made eight appearances over the course of that campaign including winning a ‘man of the match’ award when his promptings tore York City apart as the Town won 5-1 at Kenilworth Road on the final day of the season.

With Luton supporters thinking that Brian had done enough to earn a regular place he was unable to displace Ray Whittaker in 1967/68 as the Hatters walked away with the championship of Division Four.

Brian turned his back on the game after that and returned to his native Newcastle where he joined Royal Mail.
