He had been on Middlesbrough.’s books but failed to make the first team. A hard working striker and Cameron spent two seasons with the Bluebirds saw 79 appearances netting 27 times. May 2006 saw a £3m transfer to Birmingham City where he would spend 5 full seasons making 202 appearances scoring 42 goals. Top flight Stoke City paid a reported £4m on the last day of the transfer window in August 2011.
Two full seasons in the top flight with the Potters proved successful but Cameron fell out of favour. He was loaned out to Crystal Palace for the 2013/14 season where he played 29 times scoring twice. Norwich were next to sign him for a reported £1.5m and again Cameron was a success in three and a half seasons. A loan to Derby County was followed by a two season spell in Turkey with Göstepe. Back to the UK in 2020 and League One MK Dons where 15 goals came from 38 games.
June 2021 saw Luton Town obtain Cameron’s services. Manager Nathan Jones said of Cameron - “He’s mobile, can run in behind, can hold it, links play, gets goals, has good presence, great experience, can press, works hard - he does all those things.”
He scored on his debut, a glancing header, in 2 2 draw in the League Cup at Stevenage on the 10th August 2021. One of his stand out goals was a powerful header from a Naismith free kick at home to West Brom in February 2022. His last game was as a substitute in the F.A. Cup win at Wigan in January 2023. As Cameron lived in the North West, a move to Bolton Wanderers ticked boxes for all parties. His contract with Luton was cancelled and he played 12 times for the Trotters in the remainder of that season. The following season saw him play 43 times scoring 4 goals in League One. In December 2024 Cameron announced his retirement from the game.
