Sadly, Luton Town supporters never saw the best of Carl as he suffered a stress fracture after only ten appearances, and seven goals, into the Hatters successful 2001/02 promotion winning side. Many Town supporters felt that the championship of Division Three would have been won had Carl remained fit alongside Steve Howard with whom he had started to enjoy a sound partnership.

A prolific goalscorer for seven clubs before joining Luton, the talented Welshman attracted over £1 million in transfer fees but his injury effectively ended his League career although he still banged in goals for a number of non-League outfits.

Carl then managed both Brentwood and Aveley.
