Charlie Watkins

Charles Watkins Date of Birth: Jan 14, 1921

Charlie made his name at Glasgow Rangers in war-time football but after the end of hostilities he found that he was often marginalised at Ibrox due the huge professional playing staff there at the time.

Following the advice of old playing colleague Billy Arnison, Charlie accepted a move to Luton in 1948 and there began a love affair with the town which never waned apart from a five year spell in South Africa in the late 1950’s where he went as a coach.

A clever and skilful wing-half or inside-forward, Charlie made over 200 League appearances for the Hatters and signed off with two goals against Bristol Rovers in 1955 which virtually assured promotion to the top flight.

Charlie held a physiotherapist and chiropodist practice in the town for many years, came back to Kenilworth Road as a coach under George Martin and was still playing football for the local Round Table well into his 60’s.

Charlie sadly passed away in 1998.
