Ernie Coxhead

Ernest Alfred Benjamin Coxhead Date of Birth: Apr 6, 1886

Born in Leytonstone in 1886 Ernie played locally before being signed up by Norwich in 1907.

During his time in Norfolk his father, who was a strict Salvationist disapproving of football, handed out an ultimatum that unless he gave up the game he could not join the family building firm.

The lure of football was too great however and he played a number of games under the name ‘A Canary’ and when joining Luton in 1909 he went by the name of ‘Brown’.

For three seasons Ernie ‘Brown’ was a crowd favourite on the right wing for the Town but on relegation from Southern League Division One in 1912 he joined Millwall.

Ernie ran a factory making struts for aeroplanes during the Great War and then bought and managed a foundry in Stratford.

Ernie passed away in Hove in 1963.
