Born in Sheffield in 1896, Fred had played for Sheffield Wednesday, Exeter, Norwich and Swindon, amongst others, in a nomadic career always showing a good goal return borne of excellent positional play.
He joined the Town in the summer of 1930 and enjoyed a good run in the autumn where he scored five goals in ten games but the Yardley - Rennie - McNestry triumvirate meant his opportunities dwindled and he hung his boots up at the end of the season, returning to Sheffield where he worked in Local Government.
Fred passed away in Leeds in 1983.
