Fred Hogg

Born in Bishop Auckland in 1918, Freddie signed for the Town in December 1936 after being spotted playing junior football in the north-east.

Reputedly only 5’3” he was given a chance for four games during 1937-38 as an inside-forward where his clever skills were outweighed by a lack of strength. Dropping to the reserves he was converted to the left-wing and was regarded as ready for first team duty once more when War broke out.

After guesting for various clubs during the War years, at the end of hostilities he had far more success with two seasons at both Mansfield and Halifax before finishing his career at Wigan Athletic.

Freddie passed away in 2001.
