Fred Kean

Frederick William Kean Date of Birth: Dec 10, 1898

Born in Sheffield in 1898, Fred had a packed a full career in by the time he signed for the Town in June 1931 but was still able to give four years valuable service before hanging up his boots.

Starting at Sheffield Wednesday in 1920, he played 230 League games and won seven of his nine England caps while at Hillsborough before a £5750 move to Bolton in 1928 where he won two more caps, an FA Cup winners medal and played 80 more League games.

It was felt he may be past his best when he came to Kenilworth Road but his fitness and ability to control a game from midfield made light of his years.

Retiring in 1935, Fred coached at Sutton for a while before returning to Sheffield to become a publican.

Fred passed away in Sheffield in 1973.
