Garreth started out at Bohemians in 1998, but unable to break through to the first team, he moved to Shamrock Rovers for a season. Back to Bohemians for one season before Bournemouth snapped him up on a free transfer in 2000. He stayed for 5 seasons making 168 appearances in midfield scoring 24 goals. In May 2005 he moved to Burnley under the Bosman ruling. Appearances in the first team were sparse, just 38 in three seasons and he was loaned back to Bournemouth.
Mick Harford was impressed enough to give Garreth a trial at Luton in the minus 30 points 2008/09 season. Looking to get the best out of the players, Garreth was brought in to bolster the midfield. He started his first game on 7th October 2008 in the 2nd round of the Football League Trophy at home to Brentford. Four appearances as substitute followed but he failed to make an impression and after just 7 games he was released in January 2009.
Garreth was snapped up by St. Patrick’s Athletic in Northern Ireland then moved around to Drogheda United, Stirling Lions, Monaghan United and finally at Shelbourne.
