George Martin

George Martin Date of Birth: Jul 14, 1899

Born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire in 1899, George first came to prominence with Hull City with whom he made over 200 League appearances as a player who could perform all along the forward line.

A stellar playing career continued with four years at Everton and a spell at Middlesbrough before joining the Town in 1933.

At Luton, the veteran George nurtured Andy Rennie, Jack Ball and Joe Payne from an inside-forward position before retiring to take on a coaching role at the club. Keeping the club going during the War years he was made manager and had started to build a decent post-War side when he was poached by Newcastle where he was very successful but less so with his next club, Aston Villa, where he eventually fell out with the Board and resigned.

Moving on to business interests in Liverpool and rekindling his passion for the Arts - he was a fine tenor who made recordings, as well being an award winning sculptor -

he eventually came back into the game when he was made Chief Scout at Luton in 1960 before very reluctantly taking over the manager’s position once more in February 1965 as the Town were plummeting to Division Four.

After a successful first full season he resigned in November 1966, with age finally catching up with him. He remained scouting for new boss Allan Brown and passed away in Luton in 1972.
