George McNestry

George McNestry Date of Birth: Jan 7, 1908

Born in Chopwell, Co Durham in 1908, George turned out for Bradford Park Avenue, Doncaster, Leeds and Sunderland without much success but this all changed when he was released by the latter to come to Luton in the summer of 1930.

Initially started on the right wing he was moved inside half way through the campaign when he formed a devastating partnership with Andy Rennie. This continued into his second campaign but the signing of Tom Tait gradually forced him back out to the wing where he was less prolific.

Even so, it was still a disappointing decision to allow him to move to Bristol Rovers in 1932 where he scored with regularity as he did with his next club, Coventry, who he helped pip the Town to promotion in 1936.

Early in the 1936-37 season George suffered a bad knee injury which sadly forced his retirement from the game but he did receive £500 from a benefit match subsequently arranged on his behalf. George passed away in 1998.
