George Smith

Born in Hitchin in 1873, George became a well-known goalkeeper, plying his trade for Hitchin Town when he was called upon by the Town in an emergency in April 1899.

Following the necessary sale of Bill Perkins to Liverpool the previous month the Town hoped to get to the end of the season by recruiting local talent and were using Philip Gentle of Luton Amateurs until he was injured.

George stepped in for a home clash with Burton Swifts and had a ‘fine game’ in a 3-0 win and returned immediately to Hitchin on hearing that Gentle would likely be available for the next match.
