George Stephenson

George Henry Stephenson Date of Birth: Nov 29, 1910

Born in Stillington, Northumberland in 1908, George had been on the books at Durham City and had trialed at Huddersfield before getting his big break at Aston Villa in 1931.

Sadly, after three unfruitful years at Villa Park he joined the Town in the summer of 1934 when his career took off.

A left-winger of the old school with pace and power and a tremendous shot he created chances galore for the likes of Joe Payne and Hugh Billington as well getting into double figures with goals scored in four of his five seasons with the club. His left-wing partnership with Fred Roberts was talked about for many years after by older supporters.

The War effectively ended his football career although he did still turn out for the Town in war-time games.

After football, George became a steward at the Conservative Club in Stockton-on-Tees but passed away suddenly in Stockton in 1964.
