George Yardley

George Yardley Date of Birth: Oct 8, 1942

Kirkcaldy born George played in goal for East Fife reserves and Scotland amateurs before moving to Forfar and Montrose. Unable to establish himself in his favoured strikers position he emigrated to Australia where he played for Sydney side St George Budapest while working as a draughtsman.

He came back to these shores in October 1966 to try his luck once more and was taken on by the Hatters who handed him his League debut in the number nine shirt in a 2-2 home draw with Bradford Park Avenue. He failed to impress but was given another chance by Tranmere the following month.

At Prenton Park, George finally fulfilled his potential and netted an amazing 68 goals in only 123 starts in two spells at the club, and becoming a terrace hero at the same time!

After hanging up his boots, George became a draughtsman on the Wirral before passing away in Fife in 2018.
