Gordon Dreyer
Gordon Dreyer Date of Birth: Jun 1, 1914 Share "Gordon Dreyer" on FacebookBorn in Sunderland in 1914, Gordon played for Sunderland boys alongside his school friend Raich Carter but failed in various trials to win a professional contract so worked in the coalmines until Hartlepools United came calling in 1934. A season at the Victoria Ground was followed by a move to Hull which did not work out and so it was back to Hartlepools.
Pools could not pay players over the summer of 1937, effectively giving Gordon a free transfer, so on a visit to Luton to visit his girlfriend (her parents had moved to the town for work) he asked for a trial.
After a period in the reserves he forced his way into the first team over Christmas 1938, a position he held until the outbreak of War. Not big for a central defender he made up for lack of height with a good spring and sound anticipation.
After the War, Gordon turned out for Bedford and Rushden and worked at Vauxhall until retirement. He passed away in Luton in 2003.
