Harry Woods

Harry Woods Date of Birth: Mar 12, 1890

Born in St Helens in 1890, Harry built up an early reputation as a ‘scheming’ inside-forward and after approaches from several clubs decided to join Norwich in 1911 where he was star performer in the years leading up to the Great War.

After serving with the Tank Corps in France he joined Football League side South Shields in 1919 once hostilities had ceased before moving to Newcastle in January 1922 for the huge sum of £2600.

His upward trajectory faltered a little at St James Park but a move to Arsenal in 1923 saw him as top scorer in his first two seasons.

The Town were looking for someone of his experience and enticed him to Luton in the summer of 1926. Age was not a barrier as Harry played on until he was 40 at Kenilworth Road setting up chances for the likes of Andy Rennie and Jimmy Yardley and weighing in with his fair share of goals also. It was often said that if he was not in the side the goals dried up.

Harry finished his career at North Shields in 1930 before returning to St Helens to work in the glass industry.
