Hugh Billington

Hugh Billington Date of Birth: Feb 24, 1916

Although born in Ampthill, Hugh was raised in Luton and was picked up by the Hatters from Waterlows (Dunstable) for whom he had scored over 80 goals in the 1937/38 season.

He then banged in 14 goals in 15 reserve team games for the Town at the start of the following campaign before scoring twice on his League debut at Tranmere and finishing up with 28 strikes from 27 Division Two matches. A truly remarkable record!

Sadly, the war then took away the best of his playing days although he did net regularly for the Hatters over the first two post-war seasons before transferring to Chelsea for £8,000.

Hugh remained in Luton until his death in 1988.
