Hugh Moffat
Hugh Moffat Date of Birth: Dec 12, 1899 Share "Hugh Moffat" on FacebookBorn in Camerton, Cumberland in 1900 Hugh had started his footballing career at Workington when he was spotted by mighty Arsenal.
Released without getting a game he joined Guildford City from where the Town took an interest. Not given enough money by the Luton scout to travel he had to hitchhike and turned up at Kenilworth Road late at night with no-one there. Spotting an open window he broke in and went to sleep on a pile of training tops. Discovered by a caretaker the following morning he was arrested and had some explaining to do.
After all this he still signed in May 1925 and the small (reports range from 5.0” to 5’5”) and quick winger with a ‘kick like a mule’ soon became a crowd favourite as he tore defences apart leading to bigger clubs rekindling their interest.
After one season at Luton, Hugh departed to Everton for an unreported ‘good fee’ but he only made two appearances at Goodison before enjoying a successful spell at Walsall and finishing his career at QPR.
Hugh passed away in 1968.
