Jack Smith

John Smith Date of Birth: Apr 3, 1882

Born in Wednesfield in 1882, Jack first came to prominence with Wolves for whom he scored 38 goals in 102 starts before moving on to Birmingham, Bristol Rovers and Norwich where he continued to net regularly.

Coming to Luton in the summer of 1910, he soon formed a sound partnership with Tommy Quinn and Bert Moody. Packing a powerful shot, he made up for his lack of height with clever distribution and ball skills from centre-forward which brought his colleagues into play.

To the dismay of supporters, who for the first time accused the Town of being a ‘selling club’ he was transferred, along with Quinn, to Millwall in March 1911. After a short spell at Coventry, Jack retired on the outbreak of the Great War and passed away in Wednesfield in 1955.
