Jack Taylor

John Ephraim Taylor Date of Birth: Sep 11, 1924

Spotted by Luton scout Dick Trembath while playing for Stockton, Hatters officials needed to move quickly, and pay £2,100, to secure the services of the powerful inside-forward in February 1949.

After scoring on his League debut for the Town during a 6-0 hammering of Lincoln, two months after moving to Kenilworth Road, Jack did not seem to make the required progress over the next couple of seasons although a succession of injuries did not help.

In 1951/52, though, he banged in 20 League goals, won an England ‘B’ cap, and was then sensationally transferred to Wolves for £16,000 where he was disappointed to become merely an understudy there.

Jack finished his career with spells at Notts County and Bradford PA before looking after his General Stores in Beechwood Road and breeding poodles for display. Jack sadly passed away whilst still in his 40’s.
