Joe McBride

Joseph McBride Date of Birth: Jun 10, 1938

A fee of £12,500 took archetypal centre-forward Joe from Kilmarnock to Wolves in December 1959 but surprisingly his style did not fit in at Molineux and he was allowed to move to Luton only two months later.

It was said that Joe was signed behind manager Syd Owen’s back but the bustling striker managed to net six goals in 13 starts in a struggling Luton side that eventually dropped to Division Two at the end of the campaign.

Early in the following season Joe was transferred to Partick Thistle, in exchange for Jim Fleming, where his skill in the air and two footed ability on the deck continued to catch the eye. This led to an eventual move to Celtic where he became Jock Stein’s first signing and, but for injury, he would have played in the 1967 European Cup final win over Inter.

Joe passed away in Glasgow in 2012.
