Joseph (Joe) O’BRIEN

The Hatters paid £3,000 to League of Ireland club Dundalk for the services of speedy left winger Joe in November 1947. Seen by Luton player/manager Dally Duncan as his replacement on the wing, Joe was thrust into the Town’s Division Two side within weeks and although he kept his place for a while it was generally accepted that it was too big a stride and he was put back into the reserves.

In the summer of 1948, during the club’s Ireland tour, Joe guested for Dundalk against the Hatters as part of the previous transfer arrangements and was treated as a returning hero. Sadly, this could not be said at Kenilworth Road and after three more appearances he was transferred to Ipswich where he enjoyed a productive first season before injury finished his career.
