Joe Pointon

Joe Pointon Date of Birth: Feb 1, 1905

.

Born in Leek in 1905, Joe played for local sides before being picked up by Second Division Port Vale in 1923 where he made ten starts in three seasons.

Moving to Luton in the summer of 1926, Joe made an instant impact at Kenilworth Road. A big, but fast, right winger with excellent crossing abilities he was very difficult to knock off the ball and became a regular in the side.

A succession of injuries held him back at times and at the end of his second season, the directors felt he was too injury prone and allowed him to move to Brighton where he failed to shine.

A subsequent move to Torquay, where he played at centre-forward, was more successful but spells at Bristol Rovers and Walsall, where he finished his first class career were less so.

Joe died in Leek from tuberculosis in 1939 at only 34 leaving a widow and nine children, the eldest of whom was only nine years old.
