Joe Roberts

Joe Roberts Date of Birth: Sep 2, 1900

Born in Birkenhead in 1900, Joe, having played football for Oswestry was 26 before he embarked on a ten year run of playing in the Football League.

Starting at Watford in 1926, Joe turned out for eight League clubs, five in Division Three South and three in the Northern section, before finishing in non-League at nearly 40.

Coming to Luton in the summer of 1932, the little left-winger initially had to share the position with Doug Rowe but eventually made the position his own alongside Andy Rennie, setting up chances for top scorer Tom Tait.

Joe’s run in the side included the long FA Cup journey to the quarter-finals in 1933 but soon after the Town were knocked out by Everton in the quarter-finals he signed for Millwall.

After hanging up his boots, Joe took over his father-in-laws newsagent shop in Vicarage Road, Watford before passing away in the town in 1984.
