John Black

John Black Date of Birth: May 26, 1900

Born in Denny, Stirlingshire in 1900, John was spotted by Sunderland, then a force in the land, but he made only two appearances at Roker Park before enjoying good spells at Nelson (then a Football League club), Accrington and finally Chesterfield where a badly broken leg almost ended his career.

Signed by the Town from the Spireites in the summer of 1926, it was not long before he became a regular in the Luton side. Standing out because of his shock of red hair, he played mainly at right-half and had the ability to quickly turn defence into attack.

Surprisingly released in 1930, he joined Bristol Rovers and enjoyed two seasons at Eastville before hanging up his boots.

John passed away in 1993.
