John Finlayson

John Finlayson Date of Birth: Nov 9, 1871

Born in Glasgow in 1871, John was big centre or inside forward who moved south to Middlesbrough and then on to Bootle where he signed professional forms in 1892.

Coming to Luton in 1893, to a team that was not playing in a competitive league, he had to make do with turning out in prestigious friendlies and local cup competitions.

On becoming founder members of the Southern League in 1894, John formed a deadly forward triumvirate with William Gallacher and Hugh Galbraith which saw the Town runners-up to Millwall.

With more professionals being added to the squad, John saw his appearances diminish and he left Luton in 1897 to join Bristol St George. From there he went on to Cowes (Isle of Wight) before retiring from the game.

John subsequently became a ‘driller’ and passed away in Cowes in 1928.
