John Foster
John Foster Date of Birth: Jan 24, 1889 Share "John Foster" on FacebookBorn in Wombwell, near Barnsley in 1889 John was the archetypal defender of the period. As befitted a former miner he was a good tackler and cleared the ball with little finesse but was effective for all that.
Starting out at Worksop Town he joined Notts County just before the Great War but did not make his debut until after hostilities had ceased. He enjoyed a good first season at Meadow Lane but was unable to win a first team spot in his second, leading to a move to Luton in the summer of 1921.
After a reasonable first season he was then used mainly as a squad player at Kenilworth Road with his appearances cut back through a succession of injuries. Leaving Luton in 1924 he finished his career with three years at Hartlepools United.
Returning to the area at the end of his playing days he worked for Adamant Engineering Ltd and then, from 1933 to 1950, at Vauxhall where he was a member of the maintenance staff. He was also an honorary member of the Beech Hill Conservative Club. At the time his death, on the 19th September 1954, he was living at 30 Saxon Road in Luton.
