Born in Kirkintilloch in 1889, John was full-back who had starred for Ayr United in the season before joining the Town in the summer of 1920 for £200.

He made his debut in the infamous 9-1 defeat at Swindon on the opening day of 1920-21 and then had to wait four months for another start. Unable to adjust to the pace and style of the game in England, John returned to Ayr at the season’s end after only seven League games in total.
