Laurie Sheffield

Laurie Sheffield Date of Birth: Apr 27, 1939

Much travelled Welsh striker Laurie was not kept on as a youngster at Bristol Rovers so moved on to non-League Barry from where he was brought back into the Football League by Newport, making his debut in 1962.

A prolific goalscorer who was good in the air for a relatively short man, Laurie was in much demand and moved around frequently. A £10,000 cheque brought him to Luton in 1968 and he scored 12 goals in 29 starts alongside Bruce Rioch in the Hatters forward line in his first season.

The discovery of Malcolm Macdonald and the signing of Matt Tees spelled the end for him at Kenilworth Road and he was on his way again. A broken ankle eventually finishing his career while he was with Peterborough .

Subsequently Laurie became a coach with Doncaster, a mortgage adviser and professed to ‘live on the golf course.’ In retirement in Bessacarr.

Laurie sadly passed away in November 2021.
