Les joined his local side, Southampton, from school signing professional terms in November 1969. He made two League appearances for the Saints, scoring in the second, but found first team appearances hard to come by with the top flight side and agreed to step down a level by joining Harry Haslam’s new look team in the summer of 1972.

Sadly, the quick striker fared little better at Kenilworth Road and made only a cameo appearance coming on as substitute for Gordon Hindson in a 1-2 home defeat at the hands of Hull in October 1972. His ten minutes of glory remain the shortest League career in the history of the Hatters.

Les eventually moved back to Southampton and took up a job in the docks.
